Plot Summary
Stranger Things is set primarily in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, during the 1980s. It follows a group of friends, their families and allies as they uncover government secrets and battle monsters from a parallel dimension called the Upside Down. They face escalating supernatural threats orchestrated by a powerful entity.
The plot is centred on Hawkins National Laboratory, which ostensibly performs scientific research for the United States Department of Energy, but also carries out experiments on the paranormal and supernatural, sometimes with human test subjects. They end up creating a portal to an alternate dimension called the Upside Down. Its presence begins to affects the residents of Hawkins in unusual ways.
Loose Inspirations and Parallels
Hawkins Laboratory at the centre of Stranger Things draws inspiration from Project MKUltra, a top-secret CIA program which ran from 1953 to 1973. The program involved illegal mind-control experiments designed to develop techniques for manipulating human consciousness and extract information from unwilling subjects. Over 80 institutions in the United States and Canada performed the experiments without the full knowledge of the test subjects. The experiments involved the use of psychedelic drugs like LSD, sensory deprivation, electroshock therapy, hypnosis and other types of psychological and physical stress. CIA destroyed most of the incriminating documents but a Senate committee managed to discover around 20,000 pages.
Stranger Things is also inspired by a popular conspiracy theory called the Montauk Project. This conspiracy theory alleges secret US government experiments at a New York military base called Camp Hero. The experiments involved child abductions, time travel, interdimensional portals, time travel and psychic abilities. Multiple elements of the series echo these tales. In fact, the show’s original working title was “Montauk”.
