No, Mission Majnu is not a real story in the context of being a direct retelling of historical events or any specific person’s life. Mission Majnu is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language spy thriller film directed by Shantanu Bagchi. Produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the movie stars Siddharth Malhotra in the lead role, with an ensemble of supporting cast, including Rashmika Mandanna, Parmeet Sethi, Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi.
Mission Majnu is based on real historical events like India’s nuclear test in 1974, Pakistan’s secret nuclear program at Kahuta and Indian R&AW agents covertly gathering information about Pakistan’s nuclear efforts. However, the specific plot is largely fictionalised and dramatised. It combines elements from multiple real operations rather than depicting a single mission.

Plot Summary
Mission Majnu is set in the 1970s and follows Amandeep Ajitpal Singh, a dedicated R&AW agent operating in Pakistan. He works at a tailor shop in Rawalpindi under the alias Tariq Hussain. While stitching uniforms for the Pakistani army officers, he gets access to valuable intelligence.
Following India’s nuclear test in 1974, Indian intelligence receive inputs that the Pakistani dictator General Zia-ul-Haq is running a covert nuclear program headed by scientist A.Q Khan. The R&AW Chief R.N Kao tasks Amandeep with a mission, codenamed Majnu, to locate the secret nuclear facility and gather irrefutable proof to enable a pre-emptive strike with Israeli assistance.
Amandeep teams up with two other undercover agents to execute the mission. Facing mounting risks, tight security and the distrust of his handler, Amandeep pieces the clues together to discover a hidden nuclear plant in Kahuta.
The movie builds to high tension as Amandeep risks everything, including his life, to infiltrate the facility, gather physical evidence and expose Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions before it is too late.
Historical Contexts
As depicted in the movie, Pakistan indeed developed a nuclear plant at Kahuta but failed to conduct a nuclear test up until 1998. While there are reports that R&AW agents discovered the nuclear facility, there is no evidence that the Pakistanis paused their nuclear program, as shown in the movie.
While Israelis had indeed proposed a joint airstrike with India against the Kahuta nuclear facility, it was in the year 1984, not in the late 1970s as depicted in the movie. The then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi vetoed the proposal, under possible American pressure, instead of Morarji Desai, as shown in the movie.
The character of Amandeep seems to be loosely inspired from the life of Ravindra Kaushik. He was a real R&AW agent who operated in Pakistan under a Muslim identity till his capture in the year 1983.
